Are there times when your i+1 could be something where you are cutting down on something? For example, what if you normally eat two slices of chocolate cake and decide to eat one instead? In that situation I am literally -1 pieces of cake from the norm but +1 for choosing to decrease an unhealthy habit!

We try to make positive habits as they are much easier to implement than negative (taking away something) ones. Most negative habits can be reworked into positive ones it just takes time.

For example, my AM routine habit of now making a breakfast smoothie has big implications for my diet. Being more filled up by that, I am less likely to make unhealthy food choices later on in the day!

Negative habits can work IF you have positive habits to fill the vacuum, but mostly as Helper actions and Conditionals (which should be "re-framed" to be positive anyway: Don't check whatsapp until reporting -> After reporting, get to check whatsapp).

With habit building and maintenance, we can't rely on common sense. If it was common sense, self-discipline wouldn't be a virtue as everyone would just have it naturally!
But re-programming the subconscious is no easy feat (likely written in Fortran lol) and so we need to baby it. Like the fact that saying our affirmations out loud in third person is somehow better than first person is baffling perhaps but hey, studies show it is far more effective so got to accommodate the big baby that is our subconscious mind!

However the concept of i-1 is interesting and one that we see in the Intro pages of the new 12 month i+1 Journal.

Because another concept is: better to have a day that is i+0 rather than i-1.
Or if you are already on an i-1 track, to keep it there, and not go so off the rails that it becomes i-2 or worse..

As the famous golfer Jack Nicklaus used to say, his secret was having good bad days.
If the day is already bad (i+0/i-1) at least make it a good bad one (as in not SO bad).

A big deal in a game as 'mental' as golf. If you let a bad hole get to you mentally, your +1 over par could soon become +3 +4 +5 or worse. Just imagine getting royally pissed off at being stuck in a sand trap lol and taking hack after hack.

That's a pretty good point, if you can keep a level head and recognize when you are getting off the rails it is definitely better to take a moment and assess the situation then act in a way that will be beneficial than try to solve the problem while making your situation worse!

Going off of what you said earlier could you frame the i-1 as an i+1 by replacing a slice of chocolate cake with something like a serving of kale chips?
